Heart Disease: Public Enemy Number One
Far too many Americans die from heart disease every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in America. Over 600,000 Americans die from heart disease every year.
Numerous scientific studies document the ability of dietary fiber to help reduce cholesterol. A new meta-analysis examines 40 years' worth of research in an attempt to find out the ideal amount of fiber that we should consume to prevent chronic disease and premature mortality.
Overall, the research found that people who consume the most fiber in their diet are 15–30 percent less likely to die prematurely from any cause or a cardiovascular condition, compared with those who eat the least fiber.
Elevated blood cholesterol is one of the leading risk factors for heart disease and diet can be a major determinant of cholesterol.
Tandem’s co-founders worked with a team of experts in the fields of food science, nutrition and product development to perfect the recipe for Toasted Honey Almond Tandem Bars. Tandem Bars were formulated to include the right types of dietary fiber to help reduce cholesterol, relieve constipation and promote a healthy microbiome.
Toasted Honey Almond Tandem Bars have been independently evaluated and Heart-Check Certified by The American Heart Association.
Why We Need More Fiber
Most Americans consume far too much animal protein and far too little dietary fiber. The average American consumes only about half of the dietary fiber required for good health. As a result, dietary fiber is considered to be a “nutrient of public health concern”.
Tandem Natural Foods was founded on the premise that proper diet can play a major role in addressing certain types of health problems. When Tandem co-founder Tony DiStefano learned that his blood cholesterol level, and especially his LDL (or bad) cholesterol level, was elevated to the point where he risked heart disease, he decided to address the problem through dietary changes prior to attempting a pharmaceutical solution.
According to Tony, “heart disease is the number one killer in America and high cholesterol is a leading cause. I needed to do something about my high cholesterol, but I didn’t want a lifetime of dependence on statins or some other medication.
Through his research, he learned the following:
- The FDA recognizes that diets low in saturated fats and cholesterol that include adequate amounts of certain types of dietary fiber may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol levels.
- According to the Mayo Clinic: Soluble Fiber dissolves in water to form a gel-like material. It can help lower blood cholesterol.
- Based on the significant body of scientific research linking the consumption of certain dietary fibers to reduced blood cholesterol levels, the FDA recognizes only three sources of dietary fiber as effective in the reduction of blood cholesterol: certain oat products, barley products and psyllium seed husk.
Two of these, oats and psyllium seed husk, are gluten free.
Mr. DiStefano adopted a low cholesterol, low saturated fat diet by reducing his consumption of fatty meats, saturated oils, and dairy products containing significant amounts of cholesterol and saturated fats. He followed the FDA’s recommendations and increased his intake of soluble fiber by adding psyllium seed husk to a daily bowl of oatmeal.
After three months, Mr. DiStefano reduced his total blood cholesterol by over 20% and his LDL cholesterol level by 33%. Mr. DiStefano’s actual test results can be found on Tandem’s website at www.tandemnaturalfoods.com.
